The 108 – Winter Solstice

108 SunSalutes at Infinite Yoga

Challenge of the Season – Are you up for it?

Winter Solstice Celebration
Sunday December 20th 4:00 – 6:00ish
Celebrate the Winter Solstice with 108 (yes, that’s not typo) SunSalutes, and stoke up your internal heat before winter, while raising money for the charity Father Joe’s Villages.

108 is a very auspicious number in Hindu and Buddhist religions. There are 108 beads on a prayer mala, and 108 SunSalutes are performed at each Solstice and Equinox to herald the new season.

We’ll keep you motivated and smiling as Trevor counts the 108 accompanied by one of Dana’s great sound-tracks.

More about the Winter Solstice
The winter solstice occurs on the shortest day and longest night of the year, when the sun’s daily maximum elevation in the sky is the lowest. Since the winter solstice lasts only a moment in time, other terms are often used for the day on which it occurs, such as “midwinter”, “the shortest day”, “the longest night” or “the first day of winter”. The seasonal significance of the winter solstice is in the reversal of the gradual shortening of days and lengthening of nights.

Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied among cultures, but most recognize the event in some way with holidays, festivals, and rituals around that time with themes of religion or fertility prior to the ‘famine months’ of January – March.

Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).
